The father and son, Bergur Jónsson and Jón Bergsson from Ketilsstaðir worked together breeding horses his whole life until his father died in the summer of 2008. Jón and Bergur were both born into Horse Family. His grandfather Hallgrímur had good horses, including Fála 1286 frá Úlfsstöðum. She was the mother of Ljónslöpp frá Ketlisstöðum, who is the ancestress of the Ketilsstaðir horses. She was born 1939.
Ljónslöpp had only six offspring. The first one was born 1954 when she was 15 years old. Out of her were three horses left in the breeding at Ketilsstaðir. The mares, Rauðka and Ljóska and the stallion Glói, all full siblings out of Lýsingur 409 frá Voðmúlastöðum. The Ketilsstaða breeding has used a combination of stallions, including Ófeigur frá Hvanneyri, Hrafn frá Holtsmúla, Gustur frá Hóli and of course Stallions from Sveinn Guðmundsson from Sauðárkrókur.
Olil Amble’s mares are all related and bred by Jóhannes Stefánsson from Kleifar. Her breeding started in 1986 and many mares were temporarily in the breeding and didn’t live up to the expectations they were not bred again. When she was done going thru the mares they were all out of two mares from Kleifar, Spurning and Mugga. Both were daughters of Logi frá Kletti. Today Bergur and Olil have 22 mares in the breeding, 6 from the Kleifar pedigree and 16 from Ketilsstaðir. In the summer of 2008 the first horses were shown since the breeding was combined. They were Álfasteinn’s offspring Djörfung, Ljóni and Snerra all from Ketilsstaðir. All four year olds with the average of 8.00. This result surely encourages them to continue the mix of these two breeding lines.
